Don Benito:

We send our greetings, and we are writing you in order to comment on some things in your letter which was published in Correo Ilustrado [Letters to the Editor] in today’s La Jornada. Since my understanding is that it was summarized due to space requirements, I will only touch on what was published.

First – When we referred to the scoundrels and crooks in the PRD, we were talking about, and we will be talking about, the same ones whom you noted as being inconstant, who hijacked the party, to those whom ideas and principles don’t matter, who use the PRD (and people like you) for their personal interests. That is how those attending the August 6 encuentro understood it, and that is how, according to what I’ve seen in various publications, it was understood by other PRD members who are dissatisfied with the direction their party has taken (like Marcos Rascón). I know you would prefer it if the distinction were to be made, but what always happens is, in differentiating, they hide behind that to say “they’re not talking about us,â€? or they accuse their current rivals (in the fight for positions and jobs). And it is those rascals and crooks who are leading the PRD and who are surrounding López Obrador. And they are the ones who are responsible for our current position, because, in addition to everything you point out, we would add those attacks which they’ve made on us.

Second – I have reviewed the articles and reports by Elio Henríquez and Hermann Bellinghausen who were present at that meeting for La Jornada, as well as the recording and transcription of what I said in the two speeches I made on August 6. At no point did I say “you’re with López Obrador or you’re with the EZLN.â€? If you review the articles by the two journalists, the recording and the transcription (which will be available, complete, on the Revista Rebeldía web page), you will see that not only did I not say that, but, in addition, some of the statements speak to the exact opposite. As you can see for yourself in the articles, and by speaking to any of those present, a compañero from one of the organizations of the left who was there expressed his concern that a condition of joining “the other campaignâ€? was that one had to be against AMLO. To which I responded: “It’s not a condition for being here, being against him or anyone. What is clear is that we can’t tie the other campaign to the election campaign. We have to be very clear about that, we’re not going there.â€? I can also tell you that another compañero from another organization defended, in a long speech, the position that AMLO had to be supported (he even went so far as to compare AMLO with Hidalgo, Morelos, Zapata, Villa…and the Virgin of Guadalupe). When one of those attending the meeting, irritated more by the length of the speech than by what he was saying, tried to silence him, we intervened in order to ask that we listen to everything that compañero wanted to say.

Ask that person if he were run off, or mistreated, or if we behaved rudely to him (at the end, he gave us several books, so that we could learn more about his organization’s positions). We did not shoot him, we did not kidnap him, we did not torture him, nor did we beat him, nor did we harass him. Like the PRD did with our compañeros in Zinacantán, Las Margaritas, Altamirano and Ocosingo (those are indeed examples of the application of the “Bush doctrine� of “if you’re not with us, you’re against us…and we’ll attack you�). Believe me, all the thoughts that were expressed there were respected. But also believe me that we shall make it quite clear that we do not share those [thoughts] that say the PRD and AMLO have to be supported.

Third – What we are doing, Don Benito, is not a result of decisions made by the subcomandante, but by the entire EZLN, backed by an internal consulta, following an analysis and discussion about the consequences and responsibilities of what we are doing and will be doing: criticizing the political class (of which the PRD forms part) and trying to build an alternative of the left to it (including an alternative of the left in the face of the PRD) with another way of doing politics and with the objective of a new constitution. I believe, with pride, that if anyone has demonstrated that they assume responsibility for the consequences of what they do, it is the EZLN.

Fourth – We could invite you and those, like you, who are in the PRD and who are honest and consistent, to come and speak with us, and in that way try to convince us to support López Obrador and to accept our being led by those who despise and repress us. We could try and convince you to leave the PRD and not to continue supporting, by your presence, a politics that has nothing revolutionary nor democratic, let alone leftist, about it. Better that you make another organization and join the “other campaignâ€? under the same circumstances of equality and respect which we have already agreed to with other political organizations. We do not do so because it is not our way to tell anyone what they should or should not do. Everyone knows where they are, and, in effect, as you pointed out, assumes the consequences and responsibilities for their decisions.

Fifth – I do not know why you say we are ungrateful when we criticize the PRD. Should we have been thankful after the vote on the indigenous counter reform, after the attacks, the beatings, the harassment and armed attacks we have suffered? After the complicit silence “in order not to play along with the rightâ€??

Sixth – Those crooks and scoundrels of the PRD are, in addition, cheats. They pretend they are indignant about what we say, but they don’t take their eyes off the polls, and they breathe easily: distancing themselves from zapatismo has always been their obsession, and now “the one possessed,â€? Marcos, is solving that problem. Speak with them, and, if they are sincere (which I doubt), they’re going to tell you that they’re happy. That it’s no longer necessary to say they are “centristâ€? in order to win conservative votes, because the stridency of the one on the psychoanalyst’s couch (the Sup) has automatically placed them in that (nonexistent) political region. Now no one can accuse AMLO and the PRD of being radical, because the radicals are in the “other campaign.â€? And now the PRD can continue talking with the big businessmen and the most conservative sectors, warning them that, if they don’t support López Obrador, the option of the radical left could grow, shouting, “with a few kilos more,â€? “from the mountains of the Mexican southeast.â€?

Look, Don Benito, none of the PRD “leaders� (who represent you and others like you) have really responded to what we pointed out. On the contrary, they have resorted to the trick of answering as if what the EZLN were complaining to the PRD about was their not supporting their armed struggle. There you have it: they’re scoundrels and crooks.

Seventh – Don Benito, I know that you, and many like you, are deeply upset by our position. We will always receive the criticisms and reflections of people like you with respect and seriousness. And be assured that we will not resort to the methods the PRD uses to confront those who don’t share their policies, methods with which that party has confronted us ever since their betrayal of the constitutional recognition of indigenous rights and culture.

I won’t take any more of your time, Don Benito. I hope that, through the Revista Rebeldía web page or by any other means you find convenient, you will send us your complete letter. We are interested in learning of it. Meanwhile, once again, our greetings and respect.

Don Benito:

Lo saludamos y le escribimos para comentarle algunas cosas de su carta, publicada en el Correo Ilustrado de La Jornada de hoy. Como entiendo que se trata de una carta resumida por el espacio, sólo tocaré algo de lo que se señala en lo publicado.

Primero.- Cuando nos referimos a los bribones y sinvergüenzas que están en el PRD, hablábamos, y hablaremos, de los mismos a quienes usted señala como inconsecuentes, que secuestraron al partido, a quienes no les importan las ideas y principios, que utilizan al PRD (y a gente como usted) para sus intereses personales. Así lo entendieron los asistentes al encuentro del 6 de agosto, y así lo entendieron, por lo que veo en diversas publicaciones, otros militantes perredistas que están inconformes con el rumbo que ha tomado su partido (como Marcos Rascón). Sé que usted preferiría que se hiciera la distinción, pero lo que siempre ocurre es que, en la diferenciación, se escudan esos para decir “no están hablando de nosotros� o acusan a sus rivales en turno (por la disputa de puestos y cargos). Y son esos bribones y sinvergüenzas quienes dirigen al PRD y quienes rodean a López Obrador. Y son ellos los responsables de nuestra actual posición, porque, además de todo lo que usted señala, nosotros agregamos las agresiones que han promovido en contra nuestra.

Segundo.- He revisado las crónicas y reportajes de Elio Henríquez y Hermann Bellinghausen, quienes, par parte de La Jornada, estuvieron presentes en esa reunión; así como la grabación y la trascripción de lo que dije en las dos intervenciones que hice el día 6 de agosto. En ningún momento dije “estan con López Obrador o están con el EZLN�. Si usted revisa las crónicas de los dos periodistas, la grabación y la trascripción (que estará disponible, completa, en la página de la Revista Rebeldía) verá usted no sólo que no dije eso, sino que, además, partes de las intervenciones van precisamente en el sentido contrario. Como podrá usted constatar en las crónicas, y hablando con cualquiera de los asistentes, un compañero de una de las organizaciones de izquierda asistentes manifestó su preocupación porque fuera condición para entrar a “la otra campaña� el estar contra AMLO, a lo que yo respondí: “no es una condición para estar aquí, el estar en contra de él o de nadie, lo que si está claro es que no podemos enganchar la otra campaña a la campaña electoral, en eso sí tenemos que ser claros, no le entramos�. También le podrán contar que otro compañero de otra organización defendió, en una larga intervención, la posición de que había que apoyar a AMLO (incluso llegó a comparar a AMLO con Hidalgo, Morelos, Zapata, Villa… y la Virgen de Guadalupe). Cuando algunos de los asistentes, irritados más por lo largo de la intervención que por lo que decía, pretendieron callarlo, nosotros intervenimos para pedir que escucháramos completo lo que ese compañero quería decir.

Pregunte usted si a esa persona se le corrió o se le maltrató o fuimos groseros con él (al final nos regaló varios libros, para que conociéramos más de los planteamientos de su organización). No lo balaceamos, ni lo secuestramos, ni lo torturamos, ni lo golpeamos, ni lo hostigamos; como sí hizo el PRD con compañeros nuestros en Zinacantán, Las Margaritas, Altamirano y Ocosingo (ésos sí son ejemplos de la aplicación de la “doctrina Bush� de “si no están conmigo, entonces están contra mí… y los ataco�). Créame que se respetaron todos los pensamientos ahí manifestados, pero créame que dejaremos claro que no compartimos los que se refieren a que hay que apoyar al PRD y a AMLO.

Tercero.- Lo que estamos haciendo. Don Benito, no es consecuencia de decisiones tomadas por el subcomandante, sino por todo el EZLN, respaldadas por una consulta interna, después de un análisis y discusión sobre las consecuencias y responsabilidad de lo que hacemos y haremos: criticar a la clase política (de la que forma parte el PRD) y tratar de construir una alternativa de izquierda a ella (incluyendo una alternativa de izquierda frente al PRD) con otra forma de hacer política y con el objetivo de una nueva constitución. Creo, con orgullo, que si alguien ha demostrado que asume las consecuencias y responsabilidad de lo que hace, es el EZLN.

Cuarto.- Podríamos invitarlo a usted y a quienes, como usted, están en el PRD y son honestos y consecuentes, a que vengan a hablar con nosotros y, así como tratan de convencernos de que apoyemos a López Obrador y aceptemos que nos dirijan quienes nos desprecian y reprimen, tratar de convencerlos nosotros de que se salgan del PRD y no sigan avalando, con su presencia, una política que no tiene nada de revolucionaria ni de democrática, ya no digamos de izquierda, y que mejor hagan otra organización y se incorporen a la “otra campaña� en las mismas condiciones de igualdad y respeto que hemos acordado ya con otras organizaciones políticas. No lo hacemos porque no es nuestro modo el decirle a nadie lo que debe o no hacer. Cada quien sabe dónde está y, en efecto, como usted lo señala, asume las consecuencias y responsabilidad de sus decisiones.

Quinto.- No sé por qué usted dice que somos ingratos cuando criticamos al PRD. ¿Deberíamos estar agradecidos después del voto en la contrarreforma indígena, después de las agresiones, los secuestros, los golpes, los hostigamientos y ataques armados que hemos sufrido? ¿Después del silencio cómplice “para no hacerle el juego a la derecha “?

Sexto.- Esos sinvergüenzas y bribones del PRD son, además, tramposos. Fingen que están indignados por lo que decimos, pero no despegan los ojos de las encuestas y respiran tranquilos: deslindarse del zapatísmo siempre ha sido su obsesión, y ahora “el poseído� de Marcos les está resolviendo ese problema. Hable con ellos y, si son sinceros (que lo dudo) le van a decir que están felices, que ya no es necesario decir que son de “centro� para ganarse a los votantes conservadores, porque la estridencia del candidato al diván psicoanalista (o sea: el Sup) los ha colocado automáticamente en esa (inexistente) zona política. Ya nadie puede acusar a AMLO y al PRD de radicales, porque los radicales están en la “otra campaña�, y el PRD puede ahora seguir hablando con los grandes empresarios y los sectores más conservadores, advirtiéndoles que, si no apoyan a López Obrador, puede crecer y fortalecerse la opción de izquierda radical que, “con unos kilos de más�, vocifera “desde las montañas del sureste mexicano�.

Vea usted. Don Benito, que ninguno de los “líderes� perredístas (que lo representan a usted y a otros como usted) ha respondido realmente a lo que hemos señalado. Por el contrario, han recurrido al truco de contestar como si lo que el EZLN le reclamara al PRD es no apoyar la lucha armada. Lo dicho: son unos bribones y sinvergüenzas.

Séptimo. Don Benito, sé que a usted, y a muchos como usted, les molesta profundamente nuestra posición. Siempre recibiremos con respeto y seriedad las críticas y reflexiones de gente como usted, y tenga la seguridad de que no recurriremos a los métodos que usa el PRD para enfrentar a quienes no comparten sus políticas, métodos con los que nos ha enfrentado ese partido a partir de su traición al reconocimiento constitucional de los derechos y la cultura indígenas.

No le quito más tiempo. Don Benito. Ojalá que, a través de la página de internet de la Revista Rebeldía o por cualquier medio que considere usted conveniente, nos haga llegar su carta completa. Estamos interesados en conocerla. Mientras tanto, le reitero nuestros saludos y respeto.
